AN ACT relative to the high school curriculum for New Hampshire history.

ANALYSIS

This bill provides that public and private schools shall devote approximately equal instructional time to the teaching of United States and New Hampshire history. The bill also provides that pupils may visit historical sites and museums, and perform class projects involving the renovation of local or state historical sites as part of the New Hampshire history requirement.

STATE OF NEW HAMPSHIRE

In the Year of Our Lord Two Thousand Seven

AN ACT relative to the high school curriculum for New Hampshire history.

Be it Enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives in General Court convened:

1 Instruction in National and State History and Government. Amend RSA 189:11 to read as follows:

189:11 Instruction in National and State History and Government. In all public and private schools in the state there shall be given regular courses of instruction in the history, government and constitutions of the United States and New Hampshire, including the organization and operation of New Hampshire municipal, county and state government and of the federal government. Approximately equal amounts of instructional time shall be devoted to the teaching of United States and New Hampshire history. Such instruction shall begin not later than the opening of the eighth grade and shall continue in high school as an identifiable component of a year’s course in the history and government of the United States and New Hampshire. The New Hampshire history requirement may be satisfied by conducting regular classroom instruction, or by organizing visits to local and state historical sites and museums, or by performing class projects involving the renovation of local or state historical sites, or by any combination thereof.

2 Effective Date. This act shall take effect 60 days after its passage.
