STATE OF NEW HAMPSHIRE
In the Year of Our Lord Two Thousand Eleven
A RESOLUTION urging the National Park Service to permit the exhumation of the body of Meriwether Lewis to determine the cause of his death.
Whereas, Meriwether Lewis was a great pioneer and hero who explored the outermost reaches of the western United States; and
Whereas, after his historic trip through the western United States, Meriwether Lewis was made governor of Louisiana; and
Whereas, while governor of Louisiana he was called to travel to Washington D.C. for a meeting; and
Whereas, during his trip he died of a gunshot wound in Grinder’s Stand in Tennessee and was subsequently buried nearby; and
Whereas, there has been considerable debate about the cause of Meriwether Lewis’s death, whether he died from a self-inflicted gun shot wound as widely reported or whether he was murdered; and
Whereas, the descendants of Meriwether Lewis wish to know what happened to their ancestor; and
Whereas, the exhumation of Meriwether Lewis’s body would allow forensic scientists to attempt to scientifically determine his cause of death, thereby solving a mystery of history; and
Whereas, the solving of such an interesting case could cause more students to be interested in history; now, therefore, be it
Resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:
That the general court urges the National Park Service to allow the exhumation of Meriwether Lewis’s body in order to determine his cause of death using modern forensic procedures; and
That the house clerk transmit copies of this resolution to the President of the United States Senate, the Speaker of the United States House of Representatives, and each member of the New Hampshire congressional delegation.
