STATE OF NEW HAMPSHIRE
In the Year of Our Lord Two Thousand Eleven
A RESOLUTION urging Congress to expedite the return of the Coast Guard Cutter USCGC Storis to the state of Alaska to become Alaska’s first maritime museum.
Whereas, prior to its decommissioning on February 8, 2007, the Coast Guard Cutter USCGC Storis served for more than 64 years in the waters off the coast of Alaska; and
Whereas, the USCGC Storis was based in Kodiak, Alaska; and
Whereas, the USCGC Storis had an area of operation that spanned from the panhandle of southern Alaska up to the Bering Sea; and
Whereas, the USCGC Storis was responsible for enforcement of fishing regulations, community services to remote villages, ice patrol, and rescue missions; and
Whereas, the USCGC Storis was known as the “Queen of the Fleet” for being the oldest active duty cutter prior to its decommissioning; and
Whereas, the USCGC Storis departed Kodiak, Alaska for the last time on March 12, 2007 and now sits as a lifeless hull on California’s Sacramento River; and
Whereas, there was an attempt in the Coast Guard Authorization Act of 2010 to return the USCGC Storis to Alaska for use as Alaska’s first maritime museum, but the provision authorizing the transfer of title of the USCGC Storis to the Storis Museum was omitted from the act; now, therefore, be it
Resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:
That the New Hampshire general court urges Congress to adopt legislation submitted by the Alaska congressional delegation to transfer title of the USCGC Storis to the Storis Museum and to appropriate the necessary funds to return the USCGC Storis to its home in Alaska; and
That the clerk of the New Hampshire house of representatives transmit copies of this resolution, signed by the speaker of the house of representatives and the senate president to the Speaker of the House of Representatives, the President of the Senate, and each member of the New Hampshire congressional delegation.
