STATE OF NEW HAMPSHIRE
In the Year of Our Lord Two Thousand Eleven
A RESOLUTION urging that the United Kingdom return the Parthenon (Elgin) marbles to Greece.
Whereas, 253 ancient statues and other works of art were removed from the Parthenon in Athens, Greece in 1800 and transported to the British National Museum in London, England; and
Whereas, these marbles are masterpieces of art embodying values of a lasting importance and bespeak the dishonor of those who fragmented them, traded them, and removed them from their original contexts; and
Whereas, many communities around the world have called for the return of the marbles to their place of origin so that they may be reunited with the other Parthenon sculptures, thus rebuilding the great monument of the Parthenon which is one of the most emblematic monuments of humanity; now, therefore, be it
Resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:
That the New Hampshire state legislature urges the British government to return the Elgin marbles to Greece so they may be reunited with the remaining Parthenon marbles; and
That signed copies of this resolution be transmitted by the house clerk to the President of the United States of America, the President of the Senate of the United States of America, the United States Ambassador to the United Kingdom, the Speaker of the House of Representatives of the United States of America, and the members of the New Hampshire congressional delegation.
