STATE OF NEW HAMPSHIRE

In the Year of Our Lord Two Thousand Twelve

AN ACT requiring the department of transportation to post signs on roads that cross the border into Massachusetts.

Be it Enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives in General Court convened:

1 New Subdivision; Border Signage. Amend RSA 230 by inserting after section 83 the following new subdivision:

Border Signage

230:84 Signs at Massachusetts Border. All roads that cross the New Hampshire/Massachusetts state line shall bear signs that say “Warning: Massachusetts Border 500 Feet.”

230:85 Signage. The department of transportation shall erect a suitable marker and signage at the site specified in RSA 230:84. The design, construction, and installation of any signage or other markers required under this subdivision shall be approved by the department of transportation.

230:86 Commissioner of Transportation to Establish Program. The commissioner of the department of transportation:

I. Shall establish a sponsor-a-sign program by directly involving citizens, groups, associations, and the business community in the sponsorship of each sign required by this subdivision. No public money shall be used to pay for such signs.

II. May recognize a citizen, group, association, or business that sponsors a sign by erecting a suitable recognition sign meeting the following criteria:

(a) The sign may consist of one or more panels, and shall be set in a location determined by the department to constitute no unreasonable safety risk to the public.

(b) No sign may exceed 20 square feet in size or be any smaller than 10 square feet in size.

(c) The citizen, group, association, or business shall be identified in a single section or panel constituting no more than ½ of the total area of the recognition sign.

2 Effective Date. This act shall take effect 60 days after its passage.
