STATE OF NEW HAMPSHIRE

In the Year of Our Lord Two Thousand Fifteen

AN ACT establishing February 6 as Ronald Reagan Day.

Be it Enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives in General Court convened:

1 Findings. The general court finds that:

I. President Ronald Wilson Reagan, a man of humble background, worked throughout his life advancing freedom and serving the public good, having been employed as an entertainer, union leader, corporate spokesman, Governor of California, and President of the United States of America.

II. Ronald Reagan served with honor and distinction for 2 terms as the 40th President of the United States of America.

III. In the election for his second term as President of the United States, Ronald Reagan was victorious in 49 of the 50 states, earning the vote of an unprecedented 3/5 of the American electorate.

IV. In 1981 when Ronald Reagan was inaugurated as President of the United States, he inherited a disillusioned nation shackled by rampant inflation and high unemployment.

V. During President Reagan’s terms in office he worked in a bipartisan manner to enact his bold agenda of restoring accountability and common sense to government, resulting in an unprecedented economic expansion and opportunity for millions of American citizens.

VI. President Reagan’s commitment to our armed forces contributed to the restoration of pride in America, in American values and in the values of liberty cherished by freedom-loving people throughout the world.

VII. President Reagan’s foresight strengthened America’s armed forces to enable our nation to triumph in the Gulf War.

VIII. President Reagan’s vision of “Peace through Strength” led to the end of the Cold War and the ultimate demise of the Soviet Union, guaranteeing basic human rights for millions of people.

IX. President Ronald Reagan was born on February 6, 1911, and died on June 5, 2004, having lived longer than any other American President.

X. Ronald Reagan was successful in capturing the New Hampshire primary by wide margins twice, in 1980 and 1984.

XI. During the New Hampshire primary of 1980, Ronald Reagan was responsible for one of the most famous moments in the primary’s history for his remark, “I paid for this microphone, Mr.?Green,” during a debate in Nashua.

XII. President Reagan, with his sincerity and compassion effectively comforted New?Hampshire citizens on the loss of one of our greatest citizens, astronaut and school teacher, Christa McAuliffe, in the space shuttle Challenger explosion.

2 New Section; Observances Proclaimed by the Governor; Ronald Reagan Day. Amend RSA 4 by inserting after section 13-t the following new section:

4:13-u Ronald Reagan Day. The governor shall annually proclaim February 6 as Ronald Reagan Day and shall urge cities and towns throughout the state to observe this day in commemoration of Ronald Reagan’s distinguished leadership and service as the 40th President of the United States.

3 Effective Date. This act shall take effect 60 days after its passage.
