STATE OF NEW HAMPSHIRE

 

In the Year of Our Lord Two Thousand Twenty Two

 

AN ACT proclaiming August 9 as Indigenous People's Day.

 

Be it Enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives in General Court convened:

 

1  New Section; Observances Proclaimed by Governor; Indigenous People's Day.  Amend RSA 4 by inserting after section 13-cc the following new section:

4:13-dd  Indigenous People's Day.  The governor shall annually issue a proclamation calling for the proper observance of August 9 as Indigenous People's Day, a day to reflect on the continuing struggles of the indigenous peoples of the Americas, including the Abenaki (also known as People of the Dawnland), who inhabited what is now known as New Hampshire for thousands of years before English settlers arrived in the 1620s. In recognizing the United Nations' International Day of the World's Indigenous Peoples, New Hampshire is honoring the 476 million indigenous peoples living in 90 countries across the world.

2  Effective Date.  This act shall take effect 60 days after its passage.
