STATE OF NEW HAMPSHIRE

In the Year of Our Lord Two Thousand Five

A RESOLUTION urging the department of defense to establish a military presence on the New Hampshire seacoast to ensure a rapid response to any threat to domestic security.

Whereas, since the terrorist attacks against the United States on September 11, 2001, ensuring homeland security has become a priority for individual states and the federal government; and

Whereas, expanding and maintaining a strong military presence both in this country and abroad is essential for long-term success in the war on terrorism and for ensuring domestic security; and

Whereas, stationing a United States Air Force squadron of fighter jets at the former Pease Air Force Base or positioning a Hawk missile battery in the state would address the need to strengthen current military infrastructure in the region; and

Whereas, the increased military presence, designated “Operation: New Hampshire Coast Watch,” would be a main thread of defense to the New Hampshire seacoast as well as to the New England region; and

Whereas, maintaining an active military presence at the former Pease Air Force Base would minimize the military’s response time, not only for immediate coastal defense, but also in the event of the necessity of a national level response; and

Whereas, using existing resources and infrastructure from the former Pease Air Force Base and the New Hampshire Air National Guard Station, at the Pease International Tradeport, will enable the squadron to become fully operational in a relatively short period of time; now, therefore, be it

Resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the New Hampshire house of representatives hereby urges Congress and the Department of Defense to take steps to establish an increased military presence in the state of New Hampshire for purposes of domestic security, including stationing a squadron of United States Air Force fighter jets at the former Pease Air Force Base and positioning a Hawk missile battery in the area; and

That the military operation be designated “Operation: New Hampshire Coast Watch;” and

That copies of this resolution, signed by the speaker of the house of representatives, be forwarded by the house clerk to the President of the United States, the Secretary of Defense, and each member of the New Hampshire congressional delegation.
