STATE OF NEW HAMPSHIRE
In the Year of Our Lord Two Thousand Seven
A RESOLUTION urging the federal government to establish a post office and a zip code in the town of Lee.
Whereas, the town of Lee has a population in excess of 4,500 and is one of the fastest growing communities in the county of Strafford; and
Whereas, a number of towns in the state of New Hampshire have populations smaller than the town of Lee's and yet have a post office or separate zip code from surrounding towns; and
Whereas, the town of Lee, having no in-town post office and therefore no designated zip code, did not exist for the state of New Hampshire department of emergency management during the May 2006 flooding emergency; and
Whereas, the town of Lee, having no in-town post office and therefore no designated zip code, causes mail to be delayed, misdirected, and lost and causes confusion and annoyance on the parts of persons outside the town and the state of New Hampshire trying to reach the town of Lee and residents of the town of Lee; and
Whereas, 1989 and 2006 town meeting votes adopted a resolution requesting that the federal government establish a post office in the town of Lee; and
Whereas, the New Hampshire general court adopted a 1992 house concurrent resolution urging the federal government to establish a post office in the town of Lee; and
Whereas, the town of Lee is presently served by the Durham post office which is located outside the town; and
Whereas, the Durham post office is overburdened, often requiring patrons to stand in line for several minutes to obtain counter service; and
Whereas, the Durham post office also experiences severe traffic congestion and parking problems which are a burden to the residents of Lee and Durham; and
Whereas, no known opposition exists within the town of Lee to establishing a post office within the town; and
Whereas, the town of Lee has a building centrally located which the town would designate as a post office; and
Whereas, it appears that the residents of the town of Lee overwhelmingly support this resolution; now, therefore be it
Resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:
That New Hampshire's congressional delegation and the federal government are strongly urged to take all possible steps necessary to expedite the establishment of a post office and a zip code in the town of Lee; and
That copies of this resolution be forwarded by the house clerk to the members of the New Hampshire congressional delegation and to the United States Postmaster General in Washington, D.C.
