STATE OF NEW HAMPSHIRE

In the Year of Our Lord Two Thousand Twelve

A RESOLUTION requesting the governor to enter into an anti-ethanol compact with other northeastern states.

Be it Enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives in General Court convened:

Whereas, the ethanol subsidy is an enormous cost to both the federal government and consumers; and

Whereas, production of ethanol has had a negative impact on the growth of corn for food, raising the price of corn needed for both the raising of livestock for meat and for the manufacture of other food products; and

Whereas, gasoline with ethanol additives has a negative effect on older engines and on the number of miles consumers can get per gallon of gasoline; and

Whereas, ethanol is not truly a renewable fuel as it requires large amounts of oil to grow and refine corn into ethanol, including the use of petroleum-based fertilizers, gasoline for farm machinery, and transportation of corn to refineries; and

Whereas, while one state speaking out against the use of ethanol would have little effect, several states banding together to speak out against ethanol would send a message to gasoline refiners and distributors, pressuring them to supply such states with ethanol free gas; and

Whereas, several states banding together to speak out against ethanol gasoline additives would send a message to the United States Environmental Protection Agency, pressuring such agency to abandon the ethanol mandate; now, therefore, be it

Resolved by the Senate and House of Representatives in General Court convened:

That the general court requests that the governor reach out to other northeastern states, including Maine, Vermont, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, and New York, to write and agree to an anti-ethanol compact; and

That copies of this resolution be sent by the senate clerk to the governors of Maine, Vermont, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, and New York.
