\tThis bill limits use of the extreme left lane by commercial motor vehicles on limited access highways with more than 2 lanes designated by the department of transportation.

STATE OF NEW HAMPSHIRE

 

In the Year of Our Lord Two Thousand Sixteen

 

AN ACT\trelative to travel on ways with 3 or more lanes.

 

Be it Enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives in General Court convened:

 

\t1  New Paragraph; Driving on Divided Ways; Use of Left Lane of Limited Access Highways.  Amend RSA 265:26 by inserting after paragraph I the following new paragraph:

\t\tI-a.  On any divided limited access highway which provides more than 2 lanes for traffic proceeding in the same direction, no operator of any commercial motor vehicle shall drive in the extreme left lane where the department of transportation so designates, except on the direction of a police officer or except when access to or egress from such highway is provided on the left, in which latter case such operator shall drive in such left lane only for such period as is reasonably necessary to enter or leave such highway safely.

\t2  Penalty.  Amend RSA 265:26, III to read as follows:

\t\tIII.  The fine for a violation of paragraph I-a of this section shall be $500.  The fine for a violation of any other provision of this section shall be $150.

\t3  Effective Date.  This act shall take effect January 1, 2017.
