STATE OF NEW HAMPSHIRE

 

In the Year of Our Lord Two Thousand Twenty-Six

 

AN ACT relative to the mathematics requirement for high school graduation.

 

Be it Enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives in General Court convened:

 

1  Education; State Board of Education; Rulemaking Authority; Standards; Employee Qualifications.  Amend RSA 186:8, VIII to read as follows:  

VIII. Requiring a high school pupil to attain competency in mathematics for each year in which he or she is in high school through graduation to ensure career and college readiness. A pupil [may] shall meet this requirement [either] by satisfactorily completing a minimum of 4 courses in mathematics [or by satisfactorily completing a minimum of 3 mathematics courses and one non-mathematics content area course, including, but not limited to, a CTE program under RSA 188-E, in which mathematics knowledge and skills are embedded and applied, as may be], as approved by the school board. [The rules shall be implemented in the 2015-16 school year.]

2  Effective Date.  This act shall take effect July 1, 2027.

METHODOLOGY:

This bill, effective for the 2027-2028 school year, changes the graduation requirement on high school students’ competency in mathematics for career and college readiness. This would require students to meet the competency, each year they are in high school until graduation, by completing four math courses, as approved by the school board.  Previously, students could meet the competency requirement by completing four math courses or by completing three math courses and one non-mathematics course that embedded and applied mathematical knowledge. This bill’s impact on local school districts is indeterminable as costs would be based on the need for new course development, material purchases for additional courses, and additional staff/teachers. Costs, if there are any, would vary from district to district.
