STATE OF NEW HAMPSHIRE
In the Year of Our Lord Two Thousand Twenty-Six
A RESOLUTION to name a certain peak after Alan Shepard.
Whereas, Alan Bartlett Shepard was born in East Derry on November 18, 1923, and graduated from both Pinkerton Academy and the United States Naval Academy; and
Whereas, through his inherent abilities, hard work and self-discipline, Alan Shepard was selected and accepted by NASA into one of the first classes of astronauts in April 1959; and
Whereas, Alan Shepard was the first American to fly into space on the Mercury 7 mission on May 5, 1961; and
Whereas, Alan Shepard was chosen as the Apollo 14 mission commander, and during this mission, he would become one of only 12 people to walk on the surface of the moon; and
Whereas, Alan Shepard retired from the United States Navy in 1974, having attained the rank of rear admiral, and would later help found the Mercury 7 scholarships, helping thousands of students to explore and discover the mysteries of space; and
Whereas, Alan Shepard’s spirit, bravery, and determination personify the attributes that make New Hampshire’s sons and daughters rightfully proud of our heritage and confirm New Hampshire’s legacy of contributing to the greatness of our nation; and
Whereas, New Hampshire has a documented history of honoring those native sons and daughters of our state who have brought pride and honor to our state through the notoriety of their work, deeds, or efforts in their lifetime; now, therefore, be it
Resolved by the House of Representatives:
That a certain peak located in the town of Bethlehem, Grafton County, which has the coordinates: 44°,13’,22” N; 71°,33’,42” W, should be known by the colloquial name "The Peak Above the Nubble," and be officially named and forever known as "Mount Shepard," in commemoration of the honor and significant contributions of Alan B. Shepard.
